Inverclyde has a population of around 82,000 covering the towns of Greenock, Port Glasgow & Gourock and the villages of Kilmacolm, Inverkip & Weymss Bay.
We have a very healthy artistic community both professional and amateur, covering an exciting range of disciplines from Literature, Music, Performance and Visual Arts. There are many professional artists working and living in Inverclyde.
As writers, actors or visual artists they can draw on the amazing industrial history, the visual surroundings of the River Clyde, modern life and all this area holds for their inspiration.
We have many concerts and festivals throughout the year and host the annual Highland Games.
Inverclyde Council supports the Arts in many ways through Education, McLean Museum, Arts Development, Community, Lifelong learning, Social Work, Economic Development and Environmental Services.
Initiatives set up through Council Services offer the people of Inverclyde wider access to the Arts, raising awareness, promoting and develop skills and understanding.
In addition James Watt College offers a wide range of courses in Music, Drama, Fine & Graphic Art. Greenock Arts Guild Theatre is the centre for the performing Arts. Pubs & Clubs promote visiting and local bands and we can boast private recording and performance studios in the district. Many other local organisations and projects have taken the Arts on board to enhance their services. Voluntary organisations play a major role in the artistic life of Inverclyde, with hundreds of people spending their leisure time pursuing their interests and talents.
The Scottish Arts Council supports Inverclyde through grant aid, help and advice. In partnership with Inverclyde Council they are presently supporting a 3 year Community Arts Programme, which has enabled us to launch this new Inverclyde Arts web site.
